About The Matthews Firm

The Matthews Firm is a small firm made up of local lawyers with deep roots in Maury and surrounding counties. Being situated in Columbia, Tennessee, our firm has represented injured clients and their families throughout the Middle Tennessee area for over 30 years. For that time, we have specialized in litigation, settlement and trial of personal injury and death cases.

The lawyers at The Matthews Firm are licensed in state and federal court, having handled cases before the Tennessee Supreme Court and Courts of Appeal, as well as before the Tennessee Claims Commission and Department of Labor.

Our lawyers maintain a focus on personal injury civil litigation. We've made it our business to help injured people and families who suffered from the injury or loss of a loved one. The law provides equal justice to all, and we ensure that the injured and the less fortunate will always be treated as so by insurance companies.

In this day and age, there are many firms handling personal injury cases. We understand that clients have choices, and we urge clients to investigate their options before hiring a personal injury lawyer in order to see whether that firm is best suited for you. Before a potential client hires an attorney to represent them in a personal injury case, the client should ask several key questions. The following are just a few questions to ask your attorney before you retain him or her:

1. Will I actually meet with an attorney before being represented or will it just be a paralegal or secretary?

2. Will the lawyers at your firm represent me, or will you refer it out to another attorney?

3. What percentage of your practice is dedicated to representing plaintiffs in personal injury cases? In less than 100%, what type of cases make up the rest?

4. How long have you been handling personal injury cases?

5. Do you hold any certfications or special licenses?

6. When was the last time you took a case to trial before a jury and what was the outcome?

7. If you work on a contingency fee basis, what percentage of my judgment or settlement will be your fee?

8. Do you ever represent insurance companies in defending personal injury cases?

9. How long do you expect my case to take?

10. What are the expected out-of-pocket costs relevant to my case and do you charge interest on costs advanced?

11. What is your attorney-to-paralegal ratio? (for example, do you have two attorneys supervising 25 paralegals or do you have 2 attorneys supervising 2 paralegals?)

12. Who will be doing the majority of work on my case, a lawyer or a paralegal?

13. Do you have malpractice insurance?

Some of the above questions can give a potential client a lot of insight into how a firm is run and whether a firm is right for you. At The Matthews Firm, although we are a small firm, we maintain a relative caseload, which allows a lot of personal communication between the lawyers and clients. At our Firm, you will always sit down and meet face-to-face with at least one of our attorneys before we take your case to learn your rights and the merits of your case. Our lawyers routinely meet with clients throughout all stages of the case, no matter how big or small the case.
